The Studio


Hocus Pocus Ruckus is located on unceded, occupied lands of the  xʷməθkʷəy̓əm,  sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ people*. We are located in Mount Pleasant, in so-called Vancouver, BC. The exact address is given when you book tickets. Sadly, our studio is not wheelchair accessible.

We are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of race, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical appearance, body size, age, religion, or social class… Together we co-create a safe(r) space and an environment of respect. We believe that consent is a foundational tenet for building safer, informed, and mutually responsible rope practices. Enthusiastic freely given consent is mandatory at all times. If there is something you are not clear on, please ask us before the event.

Our studio features: a bamboo forest rig setup, hashira poles, tatamis, pillows and couches for your comfort, as well as resting areas. gender-diverse bathroom and a kitchen corner. We have loaning ropes, safety shears, carabiners and rings.

Wednesday Lessons

When? Every Wednesday from 6 - 9 pm

Embark on a journey with Bal (they) and Armony (they). Read the description of each event carefully to select your topic. Each lesson can be taken multiple time as topics/harnesses will change each month.

Pre-requisites: any single-column tie (SCT) that will not collapse easily. If unsure about your basic knot, get into the Rope 101 Workshop (info below).

  • Ropes 101

    This hands-on introductory workshop is perfect to get you started or if you need a safety refresh! We will walk you through the safety of the mind and the body and teach you a single-column tie (SCT), tension and a few frictions! You can take this workshop solo or with a partner. No pre-requisites.

  • Self-Suspension

    No partner? No problem. Our teachers will let you try new ideas, shapes and harnesses every month. Check out the event description for details. Note that this event is mainly focused on suspensions. Make sure you have the right tools before dipping in.

Friday Jam

When? Every Friday from 6 - 10 pm

Attending the jam is a low-pressure way to come check out the scene at the studio! It is typically an open format with no set structure or instruction. Enjoy sitting, drinking tea, watching people, or browsing our resources and library. The space is welcoming with lots of room and opportunities to socialize. Our rope jams are open to anyone who has an interest in rope.

Select your new ropes during our events, or make an online order and pick them up during our jams. We carry untreated Japanese Jute rope (6mm), 8-meter lengths. Let us know if you need a specific length, we can do custom sizes.

    Not sure about getting yours yet? We have a basket of loaner ropes for lessons and jams to discover different textures and fibres.

  • You might want to start with our Ropes 101 workshop! This hands-on lesson walks you through everything you need to experiment on your own. You will be able to feel and learn the effects of tension on yourself or on a partner.

    Or attend a Friday Jam! During this open practice time, you can meet the community and discover different styles of tying in a safe(r) space.

  • Eventbrite has an integrated waitlist system, in case of a cancellation! You will have 1 day to get the available ticket before it jumps to the next person on it.
